Foil Wrapped Camping Recipes

Foil Wrapped Camping Recipes

4th of July is right around the corner and it’s my favorite holiday. My mom called the other day and we put our heads together to make up the weekly meal plan for while we are all together celebrating (she used this meal planner). The one meal everyone requested was campfire dinner packets or some might call them foil packets or hobo meals. Whatever you call it, they are delicious and easy. Not to be bossy, but I would add it to your next meal plan plus clean-up is a cinch!

It’s a super simple dinner recipe that is especially popular for camping because it can be cooked over a campfire. You place all your ingredients into a tin foil packet and cook.

There are a lot of ways you can mix up this basic recipe from the type of meat you use to the vegetables but this “original” recipe is our favorite, you can modify as you like!

This Camping Dinner Requires No Pots, Pans, Or Even Plates

This meal is a great one to get your kids involved because there’s very little cutting involved. This recipe calls for 4 packets but you can easily double or triple the recipe based on how many you have eating. We start by ripping off 4 pieces of tin foil (about 18 inches).

Then, place 1/2 can of potatoes (drained) on each of the pieces of tin foil, followed by the drained carrots and finally 1/4 of the ground beef. Crumble the ground beef evenly. Even if you don’t love onion, make sure to add 1/4 chopped onion to each packet because it adds so much flavor. I always take my kid’s onions, yum!

Finish it off by dicing up the stick of butter and evenly distributing between the packets. We like to garnish each packet with a little garlic powder, salt & pepper as well. The garnish is optional but adds some good flavor.

Go ahead and wrap it up. I normally fold in the ends first and then pull together the sides so it’s nice and secure. You can either cook it over the open flame or on the grill. We like to cook it 10 minutes seam side down and then check to see how the meat is cooking and flip it. Watch for any butter spilling out, you don’t want that! Secure the tin foil nice & tight.

When you cook it on the grill, it usually takes 10 minutes per side for a total of 20 minutes on medium heat. An open flame is a little more temperamental so enjoy a cocktail and check every 5 minutes. Everything is cooked minus the meat and onion so you want the onions to be translucent and the ground beef to be cooked through.

Simple

You can certainly eat it right out of the tin foil. We like to scoop it out of the tin foil on to a plate. You can add some other sides like dinner rolls or fruit but that’s not necessary. As kids, we ate it as a complete meal in the backyard & camping.

Switch out the ground beef for another meat like ground Italian sausage or kielbasa link sausage. Add in canned corn or any other canned vegetable. The options are endless! What do you like to put in your campfire packets? Share in the comments below.
