Recipes To Make Slime With Clear Glue
Clear Slime is a basic slime recipe and if you’ve never tried it, you really should. Last year we shared our Safe Puffy Slime Recipe and we have made it SO much!
Slime has been a great way for my kids to help with their anxiety. And my 10-year-old step-daughter loves slime too! We have been experimenting with some new slime ideas. This is a basic slime recipe – Clear Slime. Why clear slime, you ask? My kids have assured me that for SOME slime recipes you MUST start with a clear slime base. The cool thing about clear slime is that if you add something – like sand or floam – the clear slime lets the added element shine through. And after making clear slime, I have to say, clear slime has a really smooth texture and it stretches much more than puffy white-glue slime. I’m becoming a slime expert HAHAHAHA!

Now this might be controversial – but to make clear slime I don’t think there is any way around using Borax. So if your kids are smaller you might want to be keep your kids supervised for this slime tutorial. But honestly, if you use the recommended amount there really is no reason to freak out about Borax. That being said, here is our recipe for Two-Ingredient Clear Slime. It’s SO easy.
Christmas Easy Clear Homemade Slime Recipe For Kids
As I said the activator for clear slime is Borax. You add 1 teaspoon of borax to a cup of HOT water and mix until the borax has dissolved.
Borax + water mixture (We bought our Borax powder at Walmart) mixed with 1 cup of HOT water, mix until dissolved, about 1 minute. Add slowly, mixing after each tablespoon until you get a slime consistency.
Add the Borax/water mixture in 1 Tablespoon increments into the glue and mix with a wooden spoon after each tablespoon. Once the glue starts to clump together and NOT stick to the wooden spoon you can stop adding the Borax mixture. This is when you will add food coloring if you want to add color to your glue.

Then knead the slime until it is the right consistency. If it’s still too sticky, add a little more of the borax mixture. If it’s too thick, add a little more glue.
This is the trick we have found about making clear glue – you have to let it rest. When you initially make the clear glue it will be cloudy with lots of bubbles. Put it in a bowl and let it sit for at least a couple of hours – sometimes overnight. This gives it time to get fully incoporated and the cloudiness will disappear, leaving you with beautiful clear slime.
Here’s a little video showing adding the activator and mixing while the activator activates the glue. As you can see in the video, my daughter added a bunch of borax solution at once and it speeded up the process. Luckily slime making is pretty forgiving. If you add too much activator you can always just add more glue. It doesn’t have to be super precise.

How To Make Slime Recipe With Contact Solution
We always like to include a bit of homemade slime science around here! Slime is an excellent chemistry demonstration and kids love it too! Mixtures, substances, polymers, cross-linking, states of matter, elasticity, and viscosity are just a few of the science concepts that can be explored with homemade slime!

What’s slime science all about? The borate ions in the slime activators(sodium borate, borax powder, or boric acid) mix with the PVA (polyvinyl acetate) glue and forms this cool stretchy substance. This is called cross-linking!
The glue is a polymer and is made up of long, repeating, and identical strands or molecules. These molecules with flow past one another keeping the glue in a liquid state. Until…

You add the borate ions to the mixture, and it then starts to connect these long strands together. They begin to tangle and mix until the substance is less like the liquid you started with and thicker and rubbery like slime! Slime is a polymer.
Picture the difference between wet spaghetti and leftover spaghetti the next day. As the slime forms, the tangled molecule strands are much like the clump of spaghetti!

I have a lot of readers express that their clear glue slime seems brittle and crumbly, so you are not alone if you experience this. White glue and clear glue are a bit different in viscosity and make slightly different slimes. I have always found that clear glue slime is simply thicker.
We have been experimenting with the recipe just a bit to find a better ratio of ingredients. So for this easy clear glue slime, we reduced the amount of borax used.
For the most stretchy slime, I would hands down trysaline solution slime as it’s our go-to slime recipe for super stretchy slime.

The secret to stretching slime is to be move slowly and pull gently. Dues to its chemical composition it will break when you pull it fast and hard. You can break off small blobs and stretch them quite thin for a super clean look.
Note: We used a full cup of glue for this slime activity. You can also get a nice pile of slime with only 1/2 cup.
STEP 1. Measure 1 cup of clear glue into a bowl, and then add 1 cup of water to the glue. Stir to combine.

STEP 2. Measure out 1/2 teaspoon of borax powder and 1 cup of hot water as seen below to make your slime activator.
The borax powder is your slime activator. You are making a saturated solution and you will see a few particles still floating around and settling to the bottom.
STEP 4. Add the borax solution to the glue/water mixture. Start stirring! Your slime will begin to form instantly. Keep stirring until your slime has formed and remove immediately to a dry container.
How To Make Water Slime That Looks Just Like Fresh Water!
With our new ratio of borax powder to water, you should not have any leftover liquid in the bowl. If you do keep stirring. With higher ratios of borax to water, you may have leftover liquid.
You can knead the slime in the bowl
